When he wishes himself a rock, readers feel the sense of hopelessness that Sylvester is experiencing. There are few things that catch kids attention other than magical objects! We are exposed to what a genuine character Sylvester is, as he wants to use this new found magical power for the good of his loved ones (as opposed to selfish uses). Readers are quickly drawn into this story through the introduction of a magical pebble. Eventually, Sylvester is able to wish himself back to being a donkey and the family is happy once again.

One day, many months later, his parents go for a picnic near the rock. His parents and friends begin searching for him with no luck. Once he is a rock, he no longer can hold onto the pebble to wish himself back to being a donkey and has to remain a rock. When faced with a terrifying lion, Sylvester wishes himself a rock (for lack of a better safety wish). One day, he finds a pebble that turned out to be magical and would make all of his wishes come true. This story begins with Sylvester, a young donkey who loved collecting unusual pebbles.
